Versatile Tube Rotator for Lab Applications

The Spin Dr tube rotator by IBI features an adjustable platform to accommodate tube racks and plates of various heights, from 0.825" to 6.5". The lead screw design ensures that any secured rack, up to 14" wide, remains centered during rotation. Lined with foam, the platform gently holds tube racks in place, maintaining stability throughout the process.

Efficient and Flexible Rotation

Operating at speeds between 3 rpm and 100 rpm, this tube rotator is ideal for use in CO2 incubators (up to 40°C) or cold rooms (down to 0°C). The Spin Dr supports a variety of tube sizes and 96-well plates, enhancing lab efficiency without the need to transfer tubes between racks and clamps.

Rotisserie-Style Tube Rotator for All Rack Types

The Spin Dr tube rotator accommodates nearly any tube rack, eliminating the need for transferring tubes to cumbersome clamp systems. With the ability to spin various tube sizes—from 2ml to 50ml—simply place your rack inside the Spin Dr and let it handle the rest. The platform’s lead screw design ensures that any load is centered for optimal spinning, whether using 96-well plates or tube racks. This flexibility makes the Spin Dr an essential tool for any laboratory requiring precise and efficient tube rotation.

Instructions:

The Spin Dr. tube rotator is designed to operate in range of temperatures and environmental conditions. This unit can be operated inside a CO2 incubator at 95% non-condensing humidity and inside a cold room or refrigerator. Operational temperatures are 0o C to 40o C. The unit can also be operated in ambient conditions on the laboratory counter.

Warning: Make certain all other items are clear of the spinning platform of the Spin Dr. unit.

Electrical:

The Spin Dr. tube rotator operates on a standard 115vac 15 amp circuit. The unit comes with a flat, 115v, 3-prong grounded cord. This power cord is designed to mate with a standard 115vac 3-prong grounded receptacle. Make certain your receptacle is properly grounded to ensure safe operation of the Spin Dr. unit. If necessary, have your wall receptacle checked by a certified electrician for proper grounding. The flat power cord included with your unit is designed to pass through the door gasket of your incubator without compromising the environment inside the incubator.

Warning Never remove or cut the ground pin from the power cord.

Making certain you have adequate power: Determine the total amount of power presently being used by other lab equipment operating on the same circuit. The typical current demand for the Spin Dr. unit is 0.5 amps. It is critical that the added power requirement of the Spin Dr. does not cause the total power demand on the circuit to exceed the rated value of the circuit wiring or fuse at the breaker box.

Again, a certified electrician can determine the requirements and assure a safe operational circuit.

Unit Fuse: The fuse that is supplied with the Spin Dr. unit is a 5 x 20mm Slo-Blo fuse.

The fuse is rated for 115v and 630mA. Should you need to replace this fuse at some point in the life of the product. The above fuse parameters will be needed when acquiring a replacement fuse.

Note: To verify the electrical parameters for your unit, view the information on the spec plate found on the rear of the Spin Dr. unit.

Transport

Always unplug the power cord prior to physically moving the Spin Dr. unit. When moving the unit, lift the product by grasping the metal base of the unit on opposite ends. Refrain from lifting the unit by grabbing the acrylic rotating platform.

Operation Instructions:

The Spin Dr. rotator is designed to rotate many types of apparatus on an adjustable rotisserie style platform. The unit allows the user to leave tubes in their designated holder and rotate the entire holder thus alleviating having to remove the tubes from a tube holder, place them on the rotator and then remove from the rotator and place them back in the holder.

The rotisserie platform of the Spin Dr. has an adjustable height ranging from a minimum space of 0.8245" all the way to 6.5". Thus accommodating numerous types and sizes of holders including:

  • 50ml Tube holders
  • 15ml tube holders
  • 2ml tube holders
  • Blood tube holders
  • 96-well plates
  • 384-well plates
  • …AND MANY MORE

The unit platform has usable space measuring 6.25" deep x 14" wide. This allows for the stacking of numerous large tube holders, trays, or plates that can be rotated simultaneously.

To adjust the rotisserie platform for placement of item to rotate:

Locate the two turn knobs on the top of the rotisserie platform on each end. To open the rotating platform wider, turn both knobs counter-clock-wise simultaneously. To close the platform on to a tube block and hold in place, turn the knobs clock-wise simultaneously. Observe the platforms squeezing the item you placed inside for rotation. Do not over-tighten the platform. The acrylic platforms need only deflect slightly to firmly hold the item in place. The rubber mats on each platform will also serve to hold the item tightly in place. Before starting the rotation of the platform, grasp the item being held in the platform to ensure it will not slip out during rotation.

After rotating your samples the desired amount, turn the speed control counter-clock-wise to slow and ultimately turn off the unit. To align the rotating platform so that the platform adjust knobs are at the top for easy unloading, merely turn the speed control knob slightly on then off to move the platform to the desired position.

Apps & Use:

The Spin Dr rotator is ideal for rotating large numbers of sample tubes or stacked plates. The universal/adjustable platform allows for the insertion of numerous sizes and types of tube holders or plates. This eliminates having to remove your tubes from the standard tube racks then attaching the tubes to a rotator rack or clamp system for mixing then removing them from the rack or clamp system and placing them back in your tube racks when completed. Just place your tube rack or plates in the platform, adjust the platform to hold your samples and rotate. Remove when finished.

The Spin Dr can be operated inside a cold room (0o C) or a CO2 incubator operating at 95% non-condensing humidity.

Troubleshooting:

In the unlikely event a problem develops with your Spin Dr rotator, do NOT attempt to perform any service on the unit without first contacting IBI Scientific at 800-253-4942. Unauthorized servicing may void your warranty. Prior to contacting IBI Scientific for service assistance, have the Model Number and Serial Number of the unit recorded and ready. These can be found on the spec plate on the rear of the unit.

Should the Spin Dr suddenly cease to operate:

  • First check to make certain the breaker to the electrical circuit has not been tripped in the power panel.
  • Unplug the Spin Dr from the wall outlet.
  • Check the fuse at the power module where the Spin Dr power cord plugs into the rear of the unit.
  • Use a small screw driver to pry open the fuse drawer. Inspect the fuse.
  • If the fuse has failed, replace with the extra fuse that was shipped with the unit when new. If that fuse is unavailable, obtain a fuse of correct size and specifications – 115v 630mA slo-blo fuse.

Maintenance:

DO NOT Expose the unit to temperatures above 50o C

DO NOT clean the unit with organic solvents.

DO NOT clean the unit with abrasive cleaners.

Clean the unit as needed with a mild detergent such as dish soap and rinse with water.

DO NOT submerge the unit in water, merely wipe clean as needed.

If you wish to place the unit inside an incubator you can wipe the unit down with 70% ethanol to disinfect.
