  • Used in nucleic acid extraction procedures to remove phenol

Chloroform is a primary component used in nucleic acid extraction procedures to aid in the complete removal of phenol from the aqueous sample.

To use chloroform in extraction, mix chloroform and saturated phenol into a 1:1 solution. Mix with sample for ten seconds and spin down for three minutes. Remove aqueous layer and transfer into a new tube. Repeat until interface is no longer visible.
